Food Business Operators in the country have to be licensed/registered under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India as per Section 31(1) & 31(2) of the FSS Act, 2006. Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011 regulate licensing and registration. Petty food manufacturers can register. That means petty retailers, hawkers, itinerant vendors, temporary stall holders, or small or cottage businesses with annual turnovers up to ₹12 lacs. A license is required for all food businesses with income over this limit.

Food Business Operators (PAN-India) will continue receiving Consumer Grievances and will respond to these promptly at FLRS only. Until FoSCoS develops an upgraded version of the Consumer Grievance Module, FBOs and Authorities regularly visit FLRS for this module.

An Overview of Basic FSSAI Registration

Food licenses are granted to all manufacturers, traders, and restaurants involved in producing or processing food. Upon applying for FSSAI registration, a unique 14-digit licence number is issued, which must be quoted on all food packages. A license number is still required if food products are not packaged.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Indian government, the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body. FSSAI is responsible for licensing and regulating food-related businesses in India due to the FSSAI Act.

                  Benefits of Basic FSSAI Registration

                  • Consumer Awareness:

Consumers have become more aware of the food quality they consume in this information age. With the increase in diets and healthy eating food options, people need to know that what they are consuming is safe and of good quality. After the recent controversy with Maggi, consumers are taking food safety standards seriously. Thus, food is proving that they have the FSSAI license, giving you an added advantage of a solid customer base.

                  • Legal Advantage:

Getting an FSSAI license is generally seen by business owners as an expensive, time-consuming, and inconvenient documentation process. Yet, the process is not so complex, and several consultancies can assist you. The actual cost of obtaining the license is less than what you will be forced to pay in penalties if caught. Before starting a business, it is advisable first to obtain a license.

                  • Using the FSSAI Logo:

By using the FSSAI logo in your menu cards and pamphlets, you will be able to publicise the superior quality of your food. Having a food license, however, gives you an advantage over many other food operators. Therefore, all packaged foods must have an FSSAI number. Consumers view the logo as an assurance and a mark of validity. The selective customers prefer to consume food products that are licensed. Developing a brand name is made easier with it.

                  • Business Expansion

Your FSSAI license allows you to easily expand your business into other areas or outlets when the time comes. With the license, you can establish your reputation and grow your business in a new direction. Moreover, the license can make it easier for you to obtain bank loans and expand funding. According to estimates, there are more than 5 crore food businesses in the country. Still, only 33 lakh of them are registered with the FSSAI. In the short and long run, having an FSSAI license benefits your business both in the short and long run.
