However, the FSSAI lists three distinct types of food permits, which are:
Basic License, Central License and State License. The three licences are based on the food industry's operational hierarchy.
Importers, 100% export-oriented units, major groups, operators in central government organisations, terminals, ports, etc. are examples of food industry producers who are expected to obtain a central food licence. The Central Government announces the licence for Central Food. Additionally, FBOs must get a Central License for their headquarters and if they conduct business in more than one state. Therefore, businesses with a yearly revenue of more than ₹20 crores frequently use it.
For those who operate food businesses in small to medium-sized businesses, accommodation services, transporters, merchants, marketers, publishers, etc., the FSSAI State License is still required. The State Government publishes information about applicants and State Licences. The business owners can still apply for a state FSSAI licence when the business turnover is more than ₹12 lakhs but less than ₹20 crores.
Small-scale businesses, housing units, transporters, merchants, marketers, publishers, and other food industry participants are expected to obtain the FSSAI Registration, as announced by the State Government. FBOs with a State Registration Licence should have an income bracket of upto ₹12 lakhs in annual revenue.
It is required to complete the request form and meet the necessary conditions before receiving your FSSAI registration certificate and unique 14-digit registration number, which must be printed on all food packaging and in the FBO's main office.
An FSSAI number is a 14-digit code that contains information about the licence or certification status of the food maker as well as the duration of production. On the food packaging, the brand owner must include the FSSAI symbol and their licence number. On a sticker for imported food products, the shipper must display the FSSAI insignia, licence number, and name and location of the importer prior to customs clearance.
It is mandatory for every business owner to renew his food licence without fail.
It's crucial to obtain consent from each FBO, including the manufacturer, distributor, transporter, retailer, etc. When starting a food business or expanding an existing one, a food business operator must register with the FSSAI or obtain a licence from them. The FBO is obliged to renew the licence at the end of its validity period, which might range from 1 year to 5 years depending on the FBO's choice.
An application for renewing the licence should be provided in a particular format to the central licensing officials and the state authorities based on the criteria of the business.
The application must be accompanied by a self-attested document in the suggested format declaring that the applicant agrees with or will adhere to the Food Safety and Standards Act, regulations, or By-Laws. It must adhere to the cleanliness and sanitary practices standards established in the FSSAI Schedule of the Enrollment and Licensing Regulations in addition to submitting the necessary papers and paying the licence fee.
The FSSAI officers will inspect the food business to ensure that it complies with all safety standards and other licensing laws before authorising renewal. The FSSAI License renewal must be published by the competent licensing officials within 60 days.
