ISO 22000 is a management system standard that establishes a framework for food businesses to operate safely.
A working group (WG 8) under ISO Technical Committee 34 developed the ISO 22000 document on food Products. This working group eventually became an ISO subcommittee (SC 17). The management of the ISO 22000 family of standards is the responsibility of this subcommittee.
ISO 22000 was created with the goal of being easy to integrate with ISO 9001 management systems. Both standards were written using a High-Level Structure to make it easier for different management systems to integrate. The management system elements of the standard are nearly identical to the ISO 9001 equivalent, with a few minor changes pertaining to food safety. Clause 8, which deals with operations in ISO 9001, has been replaced in ISO 22000 by the CODEX HACCP principles – not in its original form, but in a way that makes the rest of the ISO 22000 standard its overall concept of food safety hazard control easier to implement. Henceforth, ISO 9001 is concerned with the quality of a product or service, whereas ISO 22000 is concerned with food safety in the food chain.
